Software Backend Engineer

About the role: - Design and operate backend infrastructure handling exports, proxy generation, media preparation, analysis, and agent-driven editing workflows - Build and maintain APIs that coordinate communication between frontend, background workers, file storage, and database layers - Develop systems for long-duration media operations including ingestion, delivery, processing queues, progress tracking, and failure handling - Scale backend architecture to remain manageable and performant as project volume, file sizes, and user activity increase - Tackle complex technical challenges in media systems and distributed backend design What we're looking for: - Proven track record owning and supporting production backend systems through product iterations and scaling - Strong mental model of distributed state, task queues, asynchronous workers, file handling, and inter-service contracts - Ability to translate product requirements—such as export speed improvements or responsive upload experiences—into sound backend architecture - Deep knowledge of media: container formats, compression standards, machine learning model output, processing performance, and visual fidelity - Comfort moving between languages; you write TypeScript, Go, Rust, Python, or whatever technology solves the problem best - Experience with FFmpeg or GStreamer libraries, or detailed knowledge of codec internals including ProRes, H.264, H.265, BRAW, R3D, DNx, and related formats (a plus) What you'll work on: - Building reliable pipelines for media uploads, transcoding, analysis, and export at scale - Designing state machines and recovery logic for jobs that span minutes or hours - Optimizing media workflows for speed and resource efficiency - Writing clear, testable code that other engineers can confidently maintain and extend
