Software Engineer (Frontend)

About the role: - Build and maintain frontend interfaces using React and TypeScript in a production environment - Develop responsive, themeable UI components using Tailwind CSS with attention to visual precision and alignment - Manage application state thoughtfully, deciding when to use local state versus global solutions like MobX, Redux, or Zustand - Contribute to and maintain a shared component library, anticipating edge cases and usage patterns beyond original design intent - Work with a ProseMirror-based editor and implement local-first sync patterns using Service Workers and IndexedDB - Integrate with backend services built in Python/Django, Golang, and Elixir, calling both REST and GraphQL APIs - Optimize interface performance and measure improvements rigorously - Build desktop experiences using Electron What you'll bring: - Shipped React and TypeScript projects to production with thoughtful architectural decisions you can reflect on - Deep understanding of state management: when state lives locally, when it belongs global, and how reactivity flows through applications - Ability to write intentional CSS in Tailwind or equivalent, producing responsive designs and catching layout issues before code review - Experience working inside shared component libraries and understanding how components break under unplanned usage - Strong fundamentals in web performance measurement and optimization Nice to haves: - Previous contributions to Plane or experience running it self-hosted - Maintenance of open-source projects that others depend on - Deep work inside rich-text editor frameworks like ProseMirror, CodeMirror, Lexical, or Tiptap - Built applications with offline-first or CRDT architecture and formed opinions on conflict resolution strategies - Built interfaces where AI agents operate on real data, with thought given to showing authorship and authority The tech stack: - Frontend tools: React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, MobX, React Router, Vite, Rolldown - Backend services: Python/Django, Golang, Elixir, Postgres, Redis - Infrastructure: Datadog, Sentry for observability; GitHub for version control; Figma for design - Everyday workspace: Slack, and notably, Plane itself for project management
