When you change the embedding model, new vectors live in a different vector space — they're incompatible with vectors made by the old model. Similarity between old and new vectors is meaningless, so you cannot mix them. The only correct handling is to re-embed the entire corpus with the new model and migrate atomically.

Migration process
1. Re-embed everything with the new model into a new index (backfill).
2. Blue-green deploy: build the new index in parallel, validate quality on a held-out eval, then switch traffic.
3. Version embeddings/indexes so you can roll back.
4. Handle any dimension change (new index of the new dimension).

You cannot query new-dimension vectors against an old-dimension index — the spaces are incompatible in both dimension and geometry. The correct fix is to re-embed the entire corpus with the new model into a new index of the new dimension and migrate via blue-green (build → validate → cut over). Don't pad or truncate arbitrarily to force-match dimensions — that destroys the semantics.
